Jim Johnson Statement on Pinelands Pipeline Approval
NEWARK, N.J. — In response to today’s Pinelands pipeline approval, gubernatorial candidate Jim Johnson released the following statement:
“I strongly object to the development of the South Jersey Gas Pipeline – both because of its potential adverse effects on our environment and the undemocratic process used to push through its approval. Doing business as usual, Governor Christie stacked the deck in his favor by appointing pipeline supporters to sway the vote against the will of the community. Under a Johnson Administration, the practice of granting advisory and regulatory board positions as political favors will end. I will ensure that environmental experts are appointed through a fair and transparent process.
“Addressing environmental issues is critical for creating a more prosperous, just and equitable New Jersey. Building a clean energy economy will not only create stable, high-quality jobs but also help to alleviate inequality in our state. Throughout my life and career, I’ve seen firsthand the disproportionate effects of climate change and pollution on low-income neighborhoods and communities of color. Equality for all begins with access to clean air, clean water, and a safe and healthy neighborhood.”
