Press Release: Jim Johnson’s Statement on Trump’s Cruel and Reckless Budget

Jim Johnson’s Statement on Trump’s Cruel and Reckless Budget

In response to President Trump’s budget, gubernatorial candidate Jim Johnson released the following statement:

“The budget released today by President Trump is cruel, reckless, and doesn’t reflect the values of our nation or New Jersey. By calling for a massive tax cut for the wealthiest Americans at the expense of our most vulnerable residents, the Trump administration has proven yet again that they are determined to tear our communities apart by dismantling programs on which so many families rely.

“The budget hits New Jersey harder than any other state, with a twenty percent cut to Medicaid funding, which provides healthcare to low-income residents. It makes cuts to the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). It cuts federal funding for free and reduced price school lunches and other programs aimed at providing New Jerseyans with basic needs like SNAP, SSDI, Habitat for Humanity, and the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness. With this budget, Donald Trump continues to turn his back on the children and families who rely on these programs.

“Two weeks from today, voters will step into the voting booths to elect the first representative of the Democratic Party to confront the Trump Administration. Here in New Jersey, Democrats have a choice between seizing our leadership role or abandoning it. As Democrats, we need to send a message about what we believe as a party and how we want to respond in the face of the politics of hate and fear. I’ve spent a lifetime fighting back against injustice and inequality. Now more than ever, with attacks coming from every level of the Government, we must come together to stand up, fight back, and put a Governor in Trenton who will put the needs of the people first.”

Last week, Johnson released a “Trump Protection Plan” for New Jerseyans. Read the full plan here.
